Celebrate Advent With Us!

Prior to Christ’s birth on the first Christmas, the people of Israel eagerly expected the coming Messiah. Times were tough, and they needed help. So Jesus surprised them when he moved into their neighborhood as a little baby, not an overbearing king. The surprises continued - who could have predicted that the One would die...and then rise from the dead!? This was too much to take in.

Of course God still speaks and acts in these days. In fact, he regularly reaches down and causes people to "die" to their life of sin and to "rise" to new life in Jesus. But as we now enter Advent, we remember that we still are in the position of waiting and expecting. We wait for Jesus to finish what he started in the world and in us. We wait for him to come back again and do more and more. This morning we will both celebrate and hope. This is what "the season" is all about!

So what does waiting look like in your life? Do you like to wait or can you not stand it? In what ways is God asking you to slow down and wait right now? How are you waiting for Him?

Please go ahead and share your thoughts.

Personally, I hate waiting. I don't tend to be a very patient person. I like to get what I want here and now. This is especially bad when I get in my head that I need the latest gadget or toy because I throw my common sense out the window and think I "need" whatever it is I feel tempted to get.

I could stand to learn a thing or two about waiting.

waiting to me is like knowing there is something so great in sight but you just can't reach it, not even with a step stool.

that's where patience comes in and praying someone will buy you a step stool for christmas

Hey Everyone,

I was just reading online and I found this article: http://blog.christianitytoday.com/outofur/archives/2006/12/whats_in_a_chur.html

It made me think about when we read and watched "Holes" and were talking about what's in a name. I realize we were talking about people and such but I feel that it could also apply greatly to the name of a church. For the name of a church not only represents those who are members of the church, their doctrines and beliefs, etc. but also to the surrounding community.

Also, sort along the lines of our discussion last night at book club, when we were talking about how a church can become associated with specifics (like a type of worship or service etc.). I was just thinking that a name could be the same thing. (I believe we talked about that briefly as well). However, I guess the thing that struck me about this article was the decision to change the name. When the author stated, "First Baptist Church doesn't cut it any longer. And most of our people agreed... ". it just struck me as odd.

I suppose, I was just wondering your take on the efforts in changing a name of a church and what it should reflect or just any opinion of the matter.
